Back Pain Care Near the Jacksonville Beaches: Evaluation and Treatment Options

Updated: Sep 16
Back pain is common and can interfere with work, sleep, exercise and everyday activities. Symptoms may follow lifting, twisting, prolonged sitting or increased activity, but they can also begin without a clear event.
Most back pain is not caused by a dangerous condition, but an appropriate evaluation helps identify whether conservative care may be suitable and whether medical assessment, imaging or referral should be considered.
Back Pain Can Have Different Contributors
Back pain may involve irritation of muscles, joints, discs or surrounding tissues. Physical demands, previous injuries, reduced activity, sleep, stress and other health conditions can influence symptoms and recovery.
Imaging findings such as disc bulges or age-related changes do not always explain how much pain a person feels. Treatment decisions should consider the complete clinical picture rather than one isolated finding or an assumption that the spine is simply “out of alignment.”
When Back Pain Needs Prompt Medical Attention
Seek prompt medical evaluation when back pain follows major trauma or is accompanied by significant leg weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, severe abdominal symptoms or rapidly worsening pain.
These findings do not automatically indicate a serious condition, but they require appropriate assessment before routine conservative treatment.
Conservative Treatment Options
For uncomplicated back pain, remaining active within tolerance is often preferable to prolonged bed rest. Conservative care may include education, gradual activity, exercise, manual therapy and other approaches selected according to the patient’s needs.
Spinal manipulation is one option that may provide modest improvements in pain and function for some patients. It does not produce the same response for everyone and should be considered as part of an individualized plan rather than a guaranteed solution.

Dr. Nick Baiata reviews each patient’s symptoms, health history, activities and goals before performing an appropriate examination. Treatment may include hands-on or lower-force adjustments, Flexion-Distraction, Thompson Drop Table, Activator, soft-tissue techniques and practical movement recommendations when appropriate.
