Sciatica describes pain or other symptoms associated with irritation of a nerve root that contributes to the sciatic nerve. Symptoms commonly travel from the lower back or buttock into the leg and may include burning pain, tingling, numbness or weakness.

Not every pain that travels into the leg is sciatica, and several conditions can produce similar symptoms. An appropriate evaluation helps guide treatment and identify when medical assessment or referral is needed.

What Can Cause Sciatica Symptoms?

Sciatica symptoms may be associated with a disc herniation, age-related narrowing around a nerve, degenerative changes or other conditions affecting a lumbar nerve root. Symptoms can also be influenced by activity, position and inflammation around the affected area.

Imaging is not automatically required for every case. The need for imaging or referral depends on the patient’s history, examination findings, symptom severity and response to conservative care.

When Sciatica Symptoms Need Prompt Medical Attention

Seek prompt medical evaluation when leg symptoms are accompanied by significant or worsening weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, fever, major trauma, unexplained weight loss or severe and rapidly worsening pain.

These findings do not automatically indicate a serious condition, but they require appropriate assessment before routine conservative treatment.

Conservative Care for Sciatica Symptoms

When serious causes have been ruled out, conservative care may include education, remaining active within tolerance, gradual exercise, manual therapy and other approaches selected according to the patient’s needs.

Chiropractic treatment may be considered for some patients with lower-back and radiating leg symptoms. The approach may include hands-on or lower-force adjustments, Flexion-Distraction, soft-tissue techniques and practical movement recommendations when appropriate. Results vary, and not every case is suitable for chiropractic care.

What to Expect During Evaluation

Dr. Baiata will ask where the symptoms travel, which activities or positions affect them and whether numbness, tingling or weakness is present. The examination may include lower-back and hip movement, strength, sensation, reflexes and orthopedic or neurological testing when appropriate.

He will explain whether chiropractic care appears suitable, whether additional evaluation is recommended and how progress will be monitored.
