FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care focuses on the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine and other joints. Chiropractors evaluate symptoms, health history, movement and examination findings before recommending care.
Treatment may include hands-on or lower-force joint adjustments, soft-tissue techniques and practical movement or exercise recommendations. At Surfside Chiropractic, care is individualized according to each patient’s condition, comfort level and goals.
What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled movement applied to a selected joint of the spine or extremities. Depending on the patient’s needs and preferences, an adjustment may be performed by hand, with a lower-force instrument or with a specialized treatment table.
Some adjustments produce a popping sound caused by a change in pressure within the joint. The sound is not required for an adjustment to be useful. The technique and amount of force are selected after considering the patient’s symptoms, examination findings and comfort level.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?
Chiropractic care can be adapted for pregnancy using comfortable positioning and techniques selected for the patient’s changing needs. Dr. Nick Baiata is certified in the Webster Technique and evaluates each patient before recommending care.
Prenatal chiropractic care focuses on the pregnant patient’s musculoskeletal comfort and function; it is not intended to turn a baby or guarantee a particular pregnancy or birth outcome. Patients with pregnancy complications or concerning symptoms should consult their obstetric healthcare provider before beginning care.
Is Chiropractic Care Appropriate for Children?
Whether chiropractic care is appropriate for a child depends on the child’s age, symptoms, health history and examination findings. Any technique considered for a younger patient should use positioning and force adapted to the child’s size and comfort.
Parents should discuss persistent pain, injury, developmental concerns or other health symptoms with the child’s pediatric healthcare provider. Dr. Baiata can explain whether chiropractic evaluation may be appropriate and when referral for medical assessment is recommended.
Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?
A medical referral is generally not required to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor. However, individual insurance plans may have their own referral, authorization or coverage requirements.
If you plan to use insurance, contact Surfside Chiropractic or your insurance provider before the visit so your benefits and any applicable requirements can be reviewed.
Does a Chiropractic Treatment Hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments are generally intended to remain within a tolerable range, but individual experiences vary. An irritated or injured area may feel tender, and some patients experience temporary soreness or stiffness after treatment.
Tell Dr. Baiata about any discomfort during the visit so the positioning, technique or amount of force can be adjusted. Lower-force options are available for patients who prefer a gentler approach.
How Many Visits Will I Need?
The number and frequency of visits depend on your condition, examination findings, goals and response to care. Some patients seek short-term care for a recent problem, while others choose occasional supportive or maintenance visits.
Dr. Baiata will explain his recommendations and reassess your progress. You are not required to purchase a prepaid package or commit to a lengthy treatment contract.
What Happens During the First Visit?
Your first visit begins with a discussion of your symptoms, health history, activities and goals. Dr. Baiata will perform an examination that may include movement, orthopedic, neurological or joint assessments when appropriate.
He will explain his findings and recommendations before treatment begins. If chiropractic care is appropriate and there are no reasons to postpone treatment, care may begin during the first visit.
Do You Accept Walk-Ins and Same-Day Appointments?
Yes. Same-day appointments are often available, and walk-ins are welcome during regular office hours. Scheduled patients receive priority, so calling (904) 241-8302 before visiting is recommended when possible.
What Insurance and Payment Options Do You Accept?
Surfside Chiropractic accepts select UnitedHealthcare plans, Medicare Part B, authorized VA Community Care referrals, qualifying automobile injury claims and self-pay patients. Coverage and benefits vary by plan.
Call (904) 241-8302 before your visit, and the office will help you understand the available payment and coverage options.
