Flexion-Distraction Chiropractic Care
Flexion-distraction is a chiropractic treatment method that uses a specialized table to guide the lower spine through gentle, rhythmic movement while controlled pressure is applied. At Surfside Chiropractic, the technique may be incorporated into individualized care for certain types of lower-back pain, stiffness and leg symptoms.
How Flexion-Distraction Works
During treatment, the patient lies face down on a specialized table with a movable lower section. Dr. Baiata uses the table to guide the lower spine through slow, controlled flexion and distraction movements while applying contact to the selected area.
Unlike a traditional thrust adjustment, flexion-distraction generally uses repeated, rhythmic movements with relatively little force. The amount and direction of movement are adapted to the patient’s symptoms, examination findings and comfort level.
When Flexion-Distraction May Be Considered
Flexion-distraction may be incorporated into care for patients experiencing:
-
Lower-back pain or stiffness
-
Pain that extends into the buttock or leg
-
Sciatica or other radiating leg symptoms
-
Disc-related lower-back pain
-
Degenerative changes accompanied by pain or restricted movement
-
Discomfort with faster or higher-force adjusting techniques
The technique is selected after reviewing your symptoms, health history and examination findings. Referral or additional evaluation may be recommended when symptoms suggest a condition requiring medical assessment.
What to Expect During Treatment
Before treatment, Dr. Baiata will review your symptoms and relevant health history and examine your lower back, movement and related neurological or orthopedic findings when appropriate.
During flexion-distraction treatment, you will lie face down while the table guides the lower spine through slow, repeated movements. The technique is adjusted to remain within a comfortable range. Your response will be reassessed, and the treatment plan may be modified as your symptoms and movement change.
A Lower-Force Option for Lower-Back Care
Flexion-distraction provides an alternative for patients who prefer slow, controlled movement instead of a traditional thrust adjustment. It may be used alone or combined with other chiropractic techniques depending on the patient’s examination findings and response to care.
Treatment may also include practical movement or exercise recommendations when appropriate. These recommendations are based on the broader examination and treatment goals, not on flexion-distraction findings alone.
